Intervista ai LIIMA (Efterklang + Tatu Rönkkö)

Casper Clausen, Mads Christian Brauer e Rasmus Stolberg degli Efterklang hanno dato vita ai Liima, un side-project tutto scandinavo dell’ineffabile indie rock band danese, affiancati dal produttore e percussionista finlandese Tatu Rönkkö. I Liima hanno esordito sulla prestigiosa 4AD con “ii” che presentano per la prima volta in Italia a giugno in occasione di Beaches Brew (6-10 giugno), il festival gratuito di Marina di Ravenna. Mercoledì 8 giugno si esibiranno su uno dei due palchi del suggestivo scenario balneare del festival. Al loro fianco ci sarà la cult-band kraut/psichedelica dei Beak> di Geoff Barrow (Portishead), il fuoriclasse del folk-rock canadese Destroyer e lo scapestrato folksinger retrò Ryley Walker con le rispettive band, e i nostalgici wave nordirlandesi Girls Names. Abbiamo parlato di questo, di Italia e soprattutto della genesi di questo nuovo intrigante progetto di pop elettronico e sperimentale, per prepararvi al meglio al festival, di cui, per la prima volta saremo media partner.
Dopo Beaches Brew (il programma completo è anche sulla pagina e sull’evento ufficiale del festival), i Liima faranno tappa il 10 giugno ad Ancona per Spilla festival e l’11 giugno a Roma, al Teatro Quirinetta.
Questa la nostra chiacchierata con Rasmus Stolberg, bassista della band.

Come siete entrati in contatto con Tatu Rönkkö? Qual è stato il suo contributo principale, oltre ovviamente, a quello musicale di percussionista e produttore?
Abbiamo incontrato Tatu nel 2012 a Berlino prima che iniziasse il tour “Piramida” degli Efterklang. Avevamo appena perso per strada il nostro batterista e ne cercavamo uno nuovo. Così abbiamo organizzato delle audizioni nel nostro studio di Berlino e tra i 10 sfidanti, l’ha spuntata proprio Tatu. C’era una chimica particolare tra di noi, come se ci intendessimo davvero all’istante, sia a livello musicale che e a livello di passione. Veniamo da background piuttosto lontani, Tatu è molto preparato scolasticamente a livello ritmico, estremamente tecnico. Noi veniamo da un’altra scuola, più digitale, sempre alla ricerca di loop e tracce del tempo. A ogni modo è stato amore a prima vista.

Synth-pop, electro-pop, avanguardia, sperimentazione. Sembra davvero difficile dare una chiave di lettura immediata ai Liima. Proviamo a descrivere il progetto in tre parole.

“ii” è stato registrato in tre giorni a Berlino, ma scritto nel corso di tre residenze mensili tra Finlandia, Istanbul e Madeira. In che misura queste tre città di tre paesi così diversi hanno influenzato il disco?
La vedo come una sorta di ricordo della canzone, come posso ascoltare ad esempio “Black Beach” e sentire nella testa le onde del luogo in cui è stata concepita. Credo sia qualcosa di piuttosto significativo per il modo in cui creiamo musica, ricordarsi sempre dove le canzoni sono nate. Mi esalta vedere come ciò si traduce nelle persone che non sono state in quel luogo, come una cartolina da una vacanza.

Credo che i Liima a tratti suonino inevitabilmente un po’ Efterklang, ma sembra esserci una potente libertà creativa. Non dovete dimostrare di essere gli Efterklang e ciò rende “ii” molto spontaneo ed eterogeneo. Come la vedete?
Ti ringrazio, è ciò che si prova quando si fa musica.

Detto ciò, ho sempre apprezzato gli Efterklang, anche per il suo essere un progetto eclettico, originale, fuori da ogni definizione. Vi chiedo: perché un disco a nome Liima e non un altro disco a nome Efterklang feat. Tatu Rönkkö?
Beh, questa è una bella domanda. Per una serie di ragioni non abbiamo reputato valida questa opzione. Ce ne sono tante, la principale che mi viene in mente è proprio Tatu. Dovevamo metterci nelle condizioni di darci un nuovo inizio. E Liima in finlandese vuol dire proprio colla, collante.

Siete pronti per il tour estivo? Suonerete per la prima volta in Italia come Liima e sarete protagonisti di Beaches Brew che tutte le band coinvolte nelle scorse edizioni considerano un’esperienza davvero unica nel suo genere. Avete mai suonato in spiaggia?
Siamo davvero contenti di suonare finalmente a questo festival, si tratta di un evento molto chiacchierato, se ne parla in ogni angolo di Europa e tutti dicono che sia davvero speciale. Quindi certamente, non vediamo l’ora di appurarlo. Amiamo Ravenna, da non perdere. Ci piace tanto suonare in Italia, è un posto dove sentirsi a proprio agio, dicono che avete un occhio di riguardo per la bellezza e non possiamo che essere d’accordo: è sempre fantastico essere da voi, dal cibo alle donne…

E le altre band che saliranno con voi sui due palchi di Beaches Brew? Avete delle preferenze particolari, degli show che siete curiosi di vedere?
La line-up è davvero incredibile. Vorrei vedere tutto, ma se dovessi sceglierne uno direi certamente i Beak>. Li abbiamo ascoltati un sacco, ma non abbiamo mai avuto modo di vederli. Tanta curiosità anche per Ata Kak e Cate Le Bon.

Altri ricordi particolari legati a vostre vecchie esperienze in Italia?
Il ricordo più intenso che mi viene in mente è certamente legato a un episodio di YpsigRock Festival dove abbiamo suonato come Efterklang. Era un giorno sereno, caldo, tipicamente estivo. Avevamo appena finito il soundcheck. All’improvviso, letteralmente “out of the blue” all’orizzonte è arrivata una tempesta enorme che si avvicina velocemente verso di noi. Gli organizzatori avevano messo su un palco stupendo di fronte a un’abitazione, ma senza alcuna copertura, quindi la nostra strumentazione era di fatto senza protezione dalla pioggia. Ci siamo messi così velocemente all’opera per mettere in salvo tutto. Una lezione di vita per noi, direttamente dalla Sicilia, un posto meraviglioso.

Qualche band danese che vi piacerebbe consigliare ai nostri lettori?
Dovreste dare un ascolto ai Liss e alle Selvehenter. Se vi piacciono, siete invitati al nostro festival berlinese nei pressi del Weisen See, By The Lake, dal 6 al 7 agosto. Sarà fantastico.

When did you meet Tatu Ronkko? Which was his main contribution (except for the percussions, of course)?
We met Tatu in Berlin 2012 before we begun the Efterklang world tour of Piramida. We had just lost our drummer in Efterklang and we were looking for a new one. We set up an audiences in our studio in Berlin and out of 10 drummers Tatu made it to the show. There was a certain chemistry between us, like we understood each other, musically and passion ally instantly. We come from quite different background, Tatu is an “rhythmically” educated drummer and is extremely technically skilled, we come from a more labouratorical and computer based background, searching for loops and traces of time. Anyway there was a sudden love!

Synth-pop, electropop, avant-garde, expérimental. It’s pretty hard to define Liima. Try to describe in three words (or briefly) how Liima actually sounds.
Like a machine

‘ii’ was recorded in three days in Berlin but written during monthly residencies in the German capital, Helsinki, Istanbul and Madeira. How did these three, so different cities and countries, affect and influence the sound?
It became the memory of the song. Like I can listen to i.e. “Black Beach and hear the waves where it was born. It’s something quite significant for the way we create music, that we always remember where the songs were born. I’m excited to see how that translates to people that were not there. like a postcard from a holiday.

Liima sometimes still recognizably sounds like your most notable project Efterklang, but there’s a powerful creative freedom. You don’t have to be Efterklang and this kind of “freedom” makes this recording really spontaneous and heterogeneous.
Thank you, that is how it feels to make the music.

I have always appreciated Efterklang as a pretty eclectic, original, unpredictably ineffable, project. Why such a “LIIMA” album and not an other Efterklang?
Well that’s a good question. For some reason we never considered that option valid. There’re different reasons, but the most strong one is possibly Tatu. We had to allow ourselves to make a new beginning, that’s why we called it Liima. It means glue in finish.

Are you ready for your summer tour. You’re playing for the first time as LIIMA in Italy. And you’re playing at Beaches Brew Festival. Many great bands who played here in the past editions consider it a very special experience, have you ever played on a beach?
We’re extremely excited to finally be playing the Beaches Brew festival. It’s rumours festival, you hear about it in every corner of Europe, it echo’s; that was a very special show. So YES we can wait to see what it is like. We love Ravenna, so it can’t be a miss. Also we REALLY love playing in Italy, it’s a very comfortable place to be, they say you have an eye for beauty, and we agree, it’s always fantastic to be in Italy. The food, the women…

Other acts playing at Beaches Brew you can’t wait to see at the beach?
It’s an incredible Line up, I want to see everything but if I’d have to point out one that’d be Beak>, I listened a lot to their music, but never saw them live. Also very curious see watch Ata Kak and Cate le bon.

Your best memories from past shows and tours in Italy
The most vivid memory that comes to my mind, is a scene from Ypsigrock festival in Sicily, where we played with Efterklang. It was a clear and hot summerday and we had just finished our soundcheck. Suddenly, and out of the blue (quite literally) on the horizon, this enormous hurricane is moving towards us. The Festival had envisioned this beautiful stage without a roof, so there was absolutely no protection for any of the equipment on stage and at front of house. We’d be trying to save all of the gear from the extreme amount of rain. I learned something about Sicily, it’s a beautiful place!
